I picked up my very first brush during a mid-life crisis in an effort to escape the bitter Iowa winters. It didn't take long before I found myself signing up for every workshop available. My family moved from state to state and with each move, I experimented with new mediums and new subject matters....from watercolors of barns in Iowa, to street scenes in Charleston, SC. I planned my paintings around sofa and wallpaper patterns to please those who were interested in my work. Although successfully selling everything I did, I rarely felt a sense of achievement or growth. Even winning awards didn't make my heart sing.
Moving back to Atlanta, I found myself surrounded by creative and supportive artists. I also found more time to dedicate to the right side of my brain. Scary as it was, I decided to start painting for my own pleasure. This 'gift' to myself opened up a whole new world of joyful, bright and bold contemporary work. I feel lost in a meditative state whether I am painting outdoors with the birds or in my studio with my Yorkie....and there are times I can actually hear my brush sing!
